あ い う え お
we will play a game recognizing the characters and saying it at the meeting this wednesday (aka tomorrow).
New thing to learn on your computer. Did you know you can write in characters on your mac? To do so, go to the apple in the top left hand corner -> System Preferences -> Language & Text (aka International or the blue wavy flag on the top row) -> Input sources. Make sure to check the box that asks "show Input menu in menu bar" also make sure to check off "japanese character pallette" and scroll down to check Kotoeri -> hiragana, katakana, and romanji.

Now once that is done you can close the Window. you will notice that at the top right hand corner you will see a US flag. click on it and you are able to now type in japanese. You can of course click other languages to write in like, chinese, thai, hebrew, etc.

Romanji is just writing characters in english (just slightly larger in font). Hiragana is the first writing alphabet that is used for japanese words. katakana is the 2nd writing alphabet that is used mainly for foreign words. once you string together characters like ai -> if you hit the down key. it will give you the kanji (japanese chracters) of the word. so あい ==> 愛
any questions, complaints, comments? just post a reply and I'll respond.
